Is Dried Fruit Really A Healthy Snack?

In the summer, locally grown fresh fruit provides maximum nutrition and taste. In the winter, though, the options are slim. When your choices are apples, oranges, grapefruit, bananas and more apples, adding a variety of fruit to your winter diet can be challenging.
Because the natural bacteria and enzymes need water to break down a food, the removal of water is all that is necessary to preserve a fruit or vegetable.

Today, dried fruit is consumed as a snack more often than for use in main dishes and desserts. Discover the benefits and disadvantages of eating dried fruit.

Calories in dried, or dehydrated, fruit
Dried fruit is a great tasting snack. It may be tempting to indulge excessively, since it also has nutritional value.

But partakers should be aware of the calories in dried fruit. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the caloric content of fruit that has been dehydrated is approximately twice that of the fresh version.

This value is not the rule for every fruit; some fruits, such as dried blueberries, contain nearly triple the calories.
