Like Shamshuddin's, thousands of families of carpenters, craftsmen
and weavers across Jodhpur, Jaipur, Kishangarh and Pokhran in Rajasthan
are getting a new lease of life due to India's recent fancy for buying
furniture online.
"I used to be paid about Rs 10,000 a month from
the traditional exporters. With the online stores, carpenters like me
get a salary of at least Rs 30,000," said Shamshuddin, who now wants to
train all his six children in carpentry.
Making an eight-sided,
spring-bedded, and hand-tufted sofa was a dying art in carpenter
families of Jaipur, so was the skill of hand-woven cushions in Pokhara.
Ecommerce has revitalised this art," said Shweta Mewara, cofounder at
Jaipur-based furniture ecommerce startup Gulmohar Lane, which employs
Shamshuddin and a staff of 20 under him.
The former design
consultant to brands such as Arvind Mills and Madura Garments moved from
Bengaluru to Jaipur to start the ecommerce portal, along with her
husband, last year.To know more visit our site http://allindiayellowpage.com.
