How to balance traveling with success in the workplace during an internship program.

Intern abroad What better way to fulfill your wanderlust than interning in a foreign city? Whilst perhaps not the traditional travel route, an internship will allow you to see somewhere new from the perspective of a young professional. You’ll be treated to eye-opening cultural experiences everywhere from the cafeteria to the boardroom and see how people work on the other side of the world.

Do your research and plan ahead of time Don’t miss out on the opportunity to travel during your internship by being lazy. Spontaneity is exciting and can lead to epic adventures, but having at least an outline of a plan will mean you see everything on your list and make it back to the office on Monday morning. Make a note of national holidays that fall during your internship so that you can plan long weekends away, check out local news websites for monthly event calendars and book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
Travel with your fellow interns Are you living in London with a French student from Paris? Then who better to jump on the Eurostar and share a weekend with in the City of Love? Ready made tour guides are just a conversation away when you are enrolled on an international internship program.  They’ll give you the lowdown on the best spots to visit away from the typical tourist traps and really show you the best of what the city has to offer. And if you find yourselves making friends with those not from nearby countries, it’s still a great opportunity to throw yourselves in to some travelling with like-minded peers.

Combine business with pleasure If you find yourself interning at a magazine looking for interesting new features, or a media company that would benefit from fresh video footage, why not ask if you can take a couple of days to gather content for their website. A desire to travel is often a big plus for employers as it demonstrates drive, ambition and confidence.

You never know, you may end up taking part in some pretty cool trips as part of your internship.   Explore your immediate surroundings Using your host city as a hub for international travel is amazing, but so is getting to grips with the town around you. Whether you are interning abroad or boosting your skills in your hometown you should treat every lunch break and evening as a chance to see something new. Even switching up your daily commute is an opportunity to stumble upon new gems and quench your thirst for exploration.
